Eye Care for Seniors

As we age, it is important to monitor and uphold proper practices to ensure healthy eyes. Individuals may experience problems with their eyesight at any stage in life, but the risks are higher for seniors.  Below are a few key approaches to safeguard your vision.

Annual Exams- Regular eye exams are the best way to protect your eyesight. A quick and painless visit to the optometrist can help discover and prevent conditions that could harm your vision in the future.1

Diet- Following a healthy diet is key to your overall wellbeing and helps to maintain healthy eyes and vision. In addition, combining foods and supplements filled with nutrients, vitamins and anti-oxidants serve to prevent certain eye conditions. Various foods, especially fish, contain essential omega-3 fatty acids that are imperative to the health of the macula, the part of the eye responsible for central vision. [1]

Exercise-Much like adhering to a healthy diet, daily exercise helps one sustain a healthy body weight, preventing diabetes which is linked to vision loss in many adults. Exercise also improves blood circulation which aids the body to remove toxins and improve oxygen levels to the eyes.[2]

Sunglasses- UV protection is extremely important to maintain and protect your eyesight. UV rays cause harm to your eyes and skin. Wearing proper eyewear, whatever the conditions, is critical.2

Screen Time- Watching too much television or using the computer for extended periods of time can be harmful for your overall sight.  Adjust the screen brightness, contrast or resolution to avoid over exerting your eyes. Prevent eye strain by taking breaks and watching from a healthy distance.
